Kava Konnection: A Non-alcoholic Chill
After completing 5 days of a badly timed 6 day work week, I wanted to relax but didn't want the typical Friday night bar scene or the groggy morning after. I decided to visit The Kava Konnection on Wade Hampton Blvd in Greenville, SC. According to WebMD:
"Kava is a beverage or extract made from the Piper methysticum plant. In the South Pacific, it's a popular drink that is used in ceremonies for relaxation.
The name "kava" comes from the Polynesian word "awa," which means bitter. Kava affects the brain and other parts of the central nervous system. Chemicals called kavalactones that are found in kava are believed to be responsible for its effects."
Kava Konnection is a laid back bar. Seating options include arm chairs, sofas, bistro tables & chairs, and seating at the bar. The mixologists are friendly, knowledgeable, and will gladly guide you through the menu to your first serving of Kava. This is chill, a non-alcoholic chill, and well deserved after a hectic week of work or life and you're not in the mood for the typical social scene. When I entered I met Ryan, one of the managers and product designers. He knows how to make a great tasting drink.
For my first drink, I ordered a Mint Hot Chocolate with almond milk. Delicious, taste like hot chocolate with a hint of mint. I drank it while starting this review. I don't know if it's me or the beverage but work and the world outside this bar just faded from thought. Wanting to stick to hot drinks so I ordered cider for my second beverage. While letting it cool I continued my review and I was relaxed. I started drinking the cider and sink more into a state of relaxation I haven't experienced in a while. This is not the most relaxed I've ever been but I find this level of tranquility hard to achieve with just a two day weekend and the ticking clock reminding me that I don't have time to relax. I do have time to relax and this place with its beverages are a great way to do this. I left after ordering a second cider to go.
I slept well that night, worked my sixth day and returned for another Mint Hot Chocolate. It was busier this time. Most of the seats were full and there was a line at the register. I can see myself becoming a regular here. This could be a perfect ending to a stressful week and it's delicious.
